Vale – Global Mining Leader, Leader in Promoting Women in Engineering

For over 24 years, Vale (formerly Vale Inco, CVRD Inco and Inco Limited), has supported CEMF to help young Canadian women become engineers. That support has taken the form of corporate grants and, starting in 2006, funding for engineering scholarships and travel costs to allow winners to attend the Awards Luncheon.
Vale is CEMFʼs largest scholarship partner, currently providing four $10,000 scholarships and possible summer jobs to students at the undergraduate and Masterʼs levels of study. Since 2006, the Foundation has awarded 24 Vale Masters and 49 Vale undergraduate engineering scholarships to some of the best engineering students in the country.
Vale Canada Limited is one of Canada’s largest mining companies, with operations in Sudbury and Port Colborne, Ontario; Thompson, Manitoba and Voiseyʼs Bay and Long Harbour, Newfoundland and Labrador. Valeʼs Base Metals is headquartered in Toronto — they are the worldʼs second largest nickel producer and a leading producer of copper, platinum group metals and cobalt.
The Foundation recognizes the outstanding and continuing support provided by Vale Canada to ensure that more Canadian women choose engineering as a career.

Rewarding Summer Job Opportunities
Vale scholarship winners may also be offered a summer job opportunity with Vale and here are those who have had this experience . . .
Hanna Janossy received her scholarship certificate at the CEMF Networking and Award Event held in Niagara Falls in May 2012.

“Working at Vale was an incredible experience in every sense. I was one of only 2 girls in the Process Engineering group of 20 employees at the central Research and Development Department, but contrary to stereotypes about mining companies, I was treated with the utmost respect. The position was particularly interesting for me because I had close to zero knowledge about mining when I started. The learning curve was pretty steep in the first few weeks, but everyone was very kind and ensured that I had access to all the information I needed. I was very lucky to be given a lot of flexibility in organizing my work, and therefore had the opportunity to speak with many employees in different departments. Altogether I learned more about mining in a summer than I ever thought possible, and enjoyed every minute of it!”
Caleigh Rutledge, 2012 Vale Undergraduate in Engineering Scholarship winner, received her certificate in Niagara Falls, Ontario presented by Michael Gribe, Manager HR Systems, Workforce Planning, Budget and Global Sourcing for Vale.

I was fortunate enough to be hired as an environmental and sustainability engineering summer student by Vale when I won the Vale Scholarship in conjunction with the CEMF in 2012. The group that I worked for were welcoming and the office atmosphere was very intimate, being composed of only approximately ten people on a given day. The work that I was tasked with was challenging and stimulating, and provided me with invaluable experience in the mining industry. It has continued to fuel my passion for environmental engineering, and has inspired a few ideas for both my senior project and future goals for when I graduate. I would absolutely recommend to any woman studying in engineering that is a leader that applying for this opportunity (and hopefully succeeding) will continue to open doors, while allowing her to shine and demonstrate her abilities to one of the most reputable mining companies in the world.
Jessica Steeves received her scholarship certificate at our Networking and Award Event ceremony held in Halifax, May 2011.

“My summer employment experience with Vale was incredible. The company sent me on four courses: introduction to Vulcan, a survey course, a ventilation course and a blasting course. The education, technical skills and practical experience I got on the job exposed me to many different aspects of the industry. The on-the-job training and experience were invaluable!”
Donna Beneteau: Vale Master’s Scholarship in Engineering Winner 2010
“A mother of three, I went back to university in my mid-40s. As a geological engineer, it seemed like the perfect opportunity to fill in some technical gaps in the field of rock mechanics. I have been fortunate to be working with global hardrock datasets while doing my thesis, and I finally get to apply my newly acquired/developed skills to an orebody, where I can work with mine personnel who have an interest in expanding the use of existing seismic systems. Vale is doing a service to mining by supporting this scholarship.”
Heather Rodger: Vale Master’s Scholarship in Engineering Winner 2006
As one of the premier recipients of the Vale Master’s Scholarship in Engineering, Heather Rodger was the first winner to participate in the Vale summer job opportunity awarded with her scholarship. Heather was able to postpone her placement until the summer of 2007 after completing her degree.
CEMF provided Heather with contact information at Vale, and on March 14, 2007 she received a summer job offer at Voisey’s Bay.
