The Foundation remembers the tragic event in Montreal which led to the death of 14 promising young women who were striving towards a future of great possibilities in their chosen profession of engineering.

On December 6, 1989 a lone gunman, armed with a rifle, entered École Polytechnique and indiscriminately killed 14 young women, 13 of whom were engineering students. He then committed suicide.

This terrible event profoundly shocked Canadians and December 6th is now observed on many university campuses and elsewhere in Canada as a memorial day. In 1991, Parliament declared that day as the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women.

The young women who were tragically killed in Montreal at École Polytechnique were:

  • • Geneviève Bergeron
